Please read the following information thoroughly before undergoing your gynecomastia correction. We encourage you to ask any questions regarding anything you might find unclear. There is no such thing as an unnecessary question. Gynecomastia refers to enlargement of the male breast, and affects an estimated 40 % to 60 % of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs (e.g. marijuana, anabolic steroids) and medical problems (e.g. liver disease) have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases. Correction can be predictably achieved. It involves the removal of fat and breast tissue, resulting in a chest that is flatter and better contoured. The scars are usually well hidden. Most patients are very happy with their results. This surgery should not be considered a substitute for weight reduction. The best results are seen in men with average body weight and firm skin tone. The Surgery A third incision, if necessary, is made on the lower part of the areola where it meets the chest wall skin. It is camouflaged in this natural line. This incision is used to remove glandular breast tissue directly. Major reductions that involve the removal of a significant amount of tissue and skin may require larger incisions that result in more conspicuous scars. Sometimes, small drains are inserted through a separate incision to draw off excess fluids. Once closed, the incisions are usually covered with a dressing. A compression garment will be placed to keep the skin firmly in place. The drains are removed five to seven days after surgery. |
