Pre-Operative Instructions
2 weeks before surgery: · Take a multivitamin with extra Vitamin C to promote wound healing. · Obtain 2 compression garments. A front closing sports bra without underwire would be ideal. We will give you detailed instructions about what you need. · Obtain a 1 inch roll of paper tape (e.g. 3M™ Micropore™ Surgical Tape) · Stop taking Vitamin E, garlic, ginkgo biloba, anti-inflammatory drugs, Aspirin or products containing aspirin (Bufferin, Anacin), and all herbal medications. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is OK. · Minimize alcohol intake until two weeks after your surgery. · Discontinue all female hormones (oral birth control or post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy) until two weeks after your surgery. Be sure to use an alternative form of contraception during this period.
Have on hand at home: · Prescriptions – analgesics and antibiotics. These will be given to you at our office, before the operation · Tylenol Extra Strength · Robaxacet or another anti-inflammatory.
24 hours prior to surgery: · Maintain good oral hydration to help prevent post operative nausea and vomiting. You need to drink at least eight 8 oz glasses of water, juice, Gatorade etc. · STOP EATING AND DRINKING 8 HOURS PRIOR TO SURGERY except for medications with a sip of water. We will advise you which medications are necessary to take before your operation.
The morning of surgery: · Shower and pay particular attention to cleaning chest wall skin and underarm areas. · Wear casual loose clothing. Be sure you have something that fastens in front - a tracksuit is ideal. Wear socks. · Bring your sports bra. · Leave at home all jewellery, including any rings and your watch.
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK FOR AT LEAST 8 HOURS PRIOR TO SURGERY. Your support person should remain with you for at least 48 hours. |
